That and ridiculous food combinations. Let us not forget the time Shaggy put together a double triple decker sardine and marshmallow fudge sandwich. In a nutshell, Shaggy and Scooby were simpletons with bottomless stomachs.
They sure sound like the stereotypical stoner. This one speaks for itself. Judging by his mannerisms and appetite, a doobie he does indeed. Probably not coincidentally, the series is meant to take place around the same time. Hippies were known to openly enjoy smoking weed. Shaggy and Scooby Doo both spend a lot of time in the back of that van doing what we assume causes their munchies.
The characters in this cartoon are all from the same place but something set Shaggy apart. He talks and acts like a spaced out hippy. Widespread, but still false. Dozens of arguments could be offered as to why no self-respecting middle-aged Hanna-Barbera artist or writer in would even think of jeopardizing the success of the show with such a joke, but the easiest refutation is to go to the source.
It wasn't until much later that this sort of rumor began to surface. Ultimately, the fact that so many people develop legends around these drawn characters, even to the point of wanting to identify with them, is a testament to the degree to which Scooby, Shaggy, and the the rest of the gang have been taken to heart by viewers over the years.
