Trips to bookstores are always a treat for me as I find Mrs. Eaves staring out at me from dozens of book covers in the most elegant compositions, each time surprising me with her many talents. Eaves, which also appears on a Radiohead album cover and the original logo for music streaming provider Pandora. So, when you next notice a typeface gracing the cover of your favorite book or album, you might consider that the fonts tell stories themselves.

That passes virtually without comment today, but it was very radical for the eighteenth century. And he railed against religion. Before he died in , he stipulated that he should not be buried in consecrated ground.
And here the fun begins. Where to put John Baskerville? First he was put in a mausoleum on his own land. But the house was wrecked during the Birmingham riots, and the land was sold. A developer eventually cut a canal through the property. In , workmen found Baskerville's lead-lined coffin. The mini-lectures that began each section were both more compelling and more concise than I have seen in any online course. And I also liked how we had lots of opportunities to apply what we had learned through a hands-on, peer-reviewed activities.
I found that my work was not at all at the level of the other students in the course - but nonetheless, everyone was still very kind and had nice feedback on the activities. It was fun to see all the different approaches - particularly in the last activity. Some of the submitted designs were truly fantastic. Here's a web version the second assignment I did for this course, in which we researched the history and features of a typeface. For my project, I chose "Baskerville.
Designed in by John Baskerville in Birmingham, England. Baskerville was designed in in Birmingham, England, by its namesake, John Baskerville ; and it was cut into metal for use in printing presses by John Handy. Other than that, John Baskerville focused on creating a higher contrast between thick and thin strokes, sharpening serifs, and shifting the axis of round letters to be more vertical.
This also made the round strokes more circular, which resulted in more regular and consistent letterforms. That being said, the difference between an old style typeface Caslon , a transitional typeface Baskerville , and a modern typeface Bodoni is mainly the contrast between thick and thin strokes.
Old has the least contrast while modern has the most. If you can identify that, then you are pretty well off! Baskerville is used a lot today in academic publications, probably from the new life Harvard brought it. For what it is usually used for, the style fits perfectly and it seems to not have been too misused yet, which is good!
