What is the difference between a principal role and a featured role

At Central Casting, we cast Background Actors and other roles to appear in our TV shows, movies, and other productions. A series regular is part of the main cast and is contracted to work on a show for a period of time, often for multiple years even if the show has not been picked up for that many seasons.

For example, Mandy Moore has not been in every episode of This is Us , but she is still credited as a series regular. The opposite is also true. Recurring actors appear in multiple episodes, either over the course of a season or the entire series. Sometimes these actors are under contract for a specified amount of time or are brought on as the story demands.

Guest stars are actors who appear in one episode sometimes more whose characters are often in multiple scenes and play a significant role in the story. If the role is particularly meaningful, a show may cast a well-known actor as a guest star, like Sterling K.

Brown appearing in an episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Co-stars and day players play characters with a limited number of lines allowed and are typically only in one or two scenes. The term co-star is used more often when describing the screen credit while day player is more commonly heard when referring to the type of contract or role. Most EPAs will ask for one bar cut of a song or a short song in the style of the show or season of shows. Some will ask for a bar cut of a song and a one-minute monologue.

Some may ask for a short monologue. Some may ask you to read from sides provided at the audition. Be sure to keep your audition under two minutes and always bring a headshot and resume. Jul 21, Jan 7, Feb 18, There are cases when an actor does not speak on camera, but is considered a principal performer, often when the role requires a certain level of acting.

While Central Casting does not typically book principal roles, we do cast Stand-Ins who work closely with actors behind the scenes. Stand-Ins take the place of principal actors for rehearsals, camera blocking, and lighting set-ups. Background Actors perform in a non-speaking role and help bring life to all kinds of productions. On set, Background Actors are given direction by Assistant Directors who tell them where and when to move in a scene.

While filming, background may cross in front of the camera, pantomime a conversation with another Background Actor, or even interact with the principal cast. This is done based on the discretion and needs of the production. As background, you should never speak on camera unless instructed to by the Director or Assistant Director. As with principal work, there are exceptions to Background Actors being purely non-speaking roles. For example, a group of Background Actors can say exclamatory words on camera and still be considered background.

Working as background not only gives people a behind the scenes look at how their favorite movies and TV shows are made, but offers an opportunity to get their foot in the door of the entertainment industry.
